Blood Orange Pomegranate Smoothie!

I like to keep things varied in terms of smoothie drinking because a sameness of such concentrated nutrition feels like both taste and certain-vitamin-overload.  Today’s smoothie is magenta (!) and since it is the color of turning dreams into action, I wanted to make sure it was both refreshing and fulfilling! Our secret ingredient (brace yourself): avocado! You won’t taste it except for the creamy, luscious and more balanced flavor it adds along with great fats to that contribute to glowing hair and skin as well as overall good health!

To make this creamy Blood Orange Pomegranate Smoothie toss into your blender:

  • 3 peeled medium-sized blood oranges (or another orange of medium size, but these blood oranges are gorgeous and excellent right now!)
  • 1/2 of an average size avocado
  • 2 tbs of fresh pomegranate seeds (*only if you have a very high speed blender, otherwise, toss in some pomegranate juice, for the seeds will be unbearable without a super-power blender)
  • a handful of ice
  • a cup of water
  • honey to taste (start with a teaspoon and work your way up depending on how tart the oranges are! raw honey is great, filtered pure honey is fine)

You can also add: agave or dates instead of honey, fresh orange juice instead of water, a whole avocado to make this ultra creamy, and you can omit the pomegranate altogether if its hard to get your hands on.

The beauty of smoothies is that you can pack in more servings of fruit and veggies in a day that are easier to stomach than 12 cups of salad… plus they are a way to explore new flavor profiles and integrate fruits, oils, greens and “superfood” additions that you maybe wouldn’t otherwise eat.  Since I started mixing in smoothies a few times a week my energy has quadrupled in a very steady, non-crash& burn way.  Some food-shui for your day! xoxo Dana
